Drift Nomads

Resourceful survivors born in failing orbital habitats.

Origins & Early History

The Drift Nomads do not have a homeworld—not anymore. Centuries ago, a cataclysmic environmental collapse rendered their ancestral planet completely uninhabitable. The survivors of this disaster fled into orbit, constructing massive, jury-rigged habitat rings. For generations, these "Drift Stations" were all they knew. Life in the Drift was precarious; every drop of water, every breath of oxygen, and every scrap of metal was recycled and fiercely guarded. The Drift became a society of scavengers, engineers, and survivors, united by the shared trauma of a lost home and the constant, gnawing threat of system failure.

The Great Ascendancy

The catalyst for their expansion was desperation. The old orbital habitats were failing, their life support systems degrading beyond the point of repair. Faced with slow suffocation, the Drift pooled their remaining resources to convert their habitats into massive, sub-light generation ships. When they finally discovered the principles of faster-than-light travel by studying a spatial anomaly, it was a moment of profound salvation. They didn't just build ships; they built flying cities. Now, the Drift roam the stars in a massive flotilla, searching for a new green world to finally call home.

Society & Culture

Drift culture is entirely nomadic and deeply communal. Their society is divided into "Flotillas," each led by an elected Captain-Council. They place immense value on engineering skill and piloting ability. To a Drift Nomad, a ship is not just a vehicle; it is a home, a shield, and a piece of their heritage. They are incredibly resourceful, able to repair complex machinery with scrap metal and duct tape. Diplomatically, they are cautious but open to trade, often offering their services as mercenaries, couriers, or salvagers in exchange for essential supplies.

Military Doctrine

The Drift military is indistinguishable from their civilian fleet. Every ship is armed, and every citizen is a trained pilot. Having grown up in zero gravity, their spatial awareness and reflexes are unmatched. Drift naval doctrine relies on extreme speed, evasion, and hit-and-run tactics. They excel at naval combat, dancing around heavier, slower vessels and striking at their weak points. However, their long history in zero-gravity has left their physiology poorly adapted to planetary gravity. They struggle immensely in ground combat, lacking both the physical endurance and the heavy armor required for planetary invasions.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Master Pilots: Drift ships are incredibly fast, evasive, and deadly in naval combat.
  • Resourceful Engineers: They possess strong industrial production and ship-building capabilities.
  • Nomadic Adaptability: They excel at exploring and surveying new star systems.
  • Gravity Intolerance: Their physiology makes them terrible at ground combat and planetary defense.
  • Agricultural Struggles: Having lived on recycled rations for generations, their farming skills are severely lacking.
